“I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.” At this, Moses hid his face, because he was afraid to look at God. The Lord said, “I have indeed seen the misery of my people in Egypt. I have heard them crying out because of their slave drivers, and I am concerned about their suffering. So I have come down to rescue them from the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that land into a good and spacious land, a land flowing with milk and honey—the home of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites.  And now the cry of the Israelites has reached me, and I have seen the way the Egyptians are oppressing them. So now, go. I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people the Israelites out of Egypt.”

          – Exodus 3:6-10

“In theory we know very well the paradoxical principle that suffering is the path to glory, death the way to life, and weakness the secret power.  It was true for Jesus and it still is for his followers today.  But we are reluctant to apply the principle to mission as the Bible does.  Mission sooner or later leads to passion, the servant must suffer, and every mission leads to some form of cross. The very shape of mission is cruciform.  We can understand mission only in terms of the cross.

         – John Stott

The problem we experience, whenever we think about the church, concerns the tension between the ideal and the reality. The ideal is beautiful. The church is the chosen and beloved people of God, his own special treasure, the covenant community to whom he has committed himself for ever, engaged in continuous worship of God and in compassionate outreach to the world, a haven of love and peace, and a pilgrim people headed to the eternal city. But in reality we who claim to be the church are often a motley rabble of rather scruffy individuals, half-educated and half-saved, uninspired in our worship, constantly bickering with each other, concerned more for our maintenance than our mission, struggling and stumbling along the road, needing constant rebuke and exhortation….

Abide – A Study of 1, 2, 3 John by Jen Wilkin

You know you should read and study God’s Word, but where do you start? Jen Wilkin will lead us through a study of 1, 2 & 3 John, teaching us how to comprehend (What does it say?), interpret (What does it mean?), and apply (What does the passage teach me about God? How does this aspect of God’s character change my view of self? What should I do in response?) God’s Word.

Cost for materials is $10.

Register to attend and, if needed, for childcare (am class only) by clicking here.
